“When making a case for gratitude as a lifestyle, it’s easy to assume that it means we ought to be thankful for everything and everyone. We can assume it means everything happens for a reason. Neither of these are true statements. Neither are found in scripture. Neither are aligned with the teachings of Jesus. If you journey through this devotional and come to the end of it thinking you ought to be thankful for the terrible parts of your life, then my goal has not been accomplished.

Gratitude as a way of life goes beyond politeness and manners. It oozes thanksgiving from our heart so strongly, we can feel it physically and emotionally. It’s an expression of love, generosity, and humility. We can sit alone and be so deeply thankful we are brought to tears. We can dwell with others and strengthen our relationships by listening, an act of gratitude that says “Thank you for sharing your story – your vulnerability – with me.” The way of gratitude is not just about keeping a list of what we’re thankful for, it is an embodiment of the gift of salvation through Christ seeping into every part of our lives.

Throughout this journal, you will be asked to reflect, to question, and to wonder. There are two primary functions of wonder: curiosity and awe.

In curiosity, we ask questions. “I wonder what this means for my life?” or “I wonder why this is worth mentioning?”

In awe, we marvel at God’s mercy, character, and magnitude. Here we say, “Behold the wonder of God!” or one of my favorite hymns, “When I survey the wondrous cross…”

Both functions of wonder connect our hearts to our minds, deepening our faith and inviting us to abide in Jesus.”
